What is Inventory Management Software?

Inventory management software is a tool designed to enable businesses to better manage their stock and warehouse operations. It helps businesses maintain accurate records of every item in their inventory, and track where it came from and when it needs to be replenished.

This allows businesses to stay on top of the items they need and make more efficient decisions when ordering new stock.

By using the best inventory management software for your business, companies can save time by eliminating manual processes and minimizing the paperwork necessary to keep track of your inventory.

Who Created Inventory Management Software?

Inventory Management Software is an incredibly useful tool for businesses, helping them keep track of their products and maintain accurate records. This type of software was first created by a small team at MIT in the early 90s – spearheaded by tech entrepreneur Stuart Miller – who used it to manage supplies within their own company.

Over time, they refined the software and began selling it to other businesses, creating what we now know as Inventory Management Software.

It was an important step forward in streamlining business processes and allowed businesses to save time through digital solutions rather than the traditional process of paperwork filing. Today, this type of software is used around the world and remains an integral part of organizing a successful business.

NetSuite Inventory Management minimizes manual processes by automatically tracking inventory levels, orders, and sales throughout the inventory life cycle, and provides the insights needed to make data-driven decisions and clear visibility into any inventory liabilities, like excess or slow-moving stock.

Multi-location Fulfillment

NetSuite Inventory Management gives you the ability to predefine fulfillment rules to eliminate multiple shipments for a single order and avoid excess shipping charges.

With visibility into stock across all locations, you can proactively monitor stock levels and sell through, transferring inventory between locations as necessary to ensure inventory availability and minimize obsolete inventory. Sales associates are empowered to save potential lost sales in out-of-stock situations with enterprise-wide inventory availability that allows them to transfer, hold or ship items directly to the customer.

Fluctuations in demand, seasonality, supply chain logistics, and a product’s natural life cycle must be accounted for to ensure sufficient stock on hand. Using demand-based replenishment, NetSuite Inventory Management uses historical and seasonal sales data, average lead time, and the number of inventory days of supply to dynamically manage item reorder points and maintain preferred stock levels. NetSuite automatically generates tasks and alerts and sends them to the purchasing manager.

Cycle Counting

NetSuite Smart Count is an inventory cycle counting solution that enables organizations to improve the efficiency and accuracy of management by automating inventory counts without freezing transactions in the entire location. The inventory level used for the count is taken at the time the count starts for each individual item. Smart Count keeps track of transactions that happen for the items being counted, and if there is any activity during the count, NetSuite automatically alerts counters so they can react appropriately. Preferences allow administrators to choose what happens if the on-hand quantity changes for an item during the counting process.

NetSuite Inventory Management lets you back and forward trace inventory using a lot and serial tracking. Lot-numbered items track the quantity and specific cost for each lot as products are purchased and produced. Serializing inventory allows you to choose a specific item when you fulfill an order. Together, lot and serial number tracking let you define fulfillment strategies (such as first expiring, first out), minimizing waste, and ensuring inventory are used in the most efficient way.

Bin management and defining your merchandise hierarchy also help with traceability. Matrix items track products by options such as size and color. Updates made to the parent item are automatically applied to sub-items, greatly simplifying SKU management.

How Cin7 helped create a glorious future for this gaming product seller

Video game hardware is a formidable market. Fortunately, gaming peripheral product sellers Glorious have Cin7 on their side

Shazim Mohammad, founder of Glorious, knew he had a great idea for a product other gamers would love. He started with a 3XL mousepad, and soon followed with a transition into more serious gaming electronics: the fully-customizable GMMK mechanical gaming keyboard combined functionality with an incredible price point. Gamers loved it, and on the back of this early success, Glorious began to think about what should come next.

“We do a lot of R&D to put out great products, but we make it so the average gamer can afford them – it’s not super expensive when you compare it to our competitors, and in terms of what you get, it’s a lot more bang for your buck,” says Glorious Director of Operations, Greg Nutter.

Greg is a long-time PC gamer, who says people are often surprised when he tells them about what he likes to do in his spare time. As a hard-core sports fan, he doesn’t fit the gamer stereotype. But, he says, gaming is now very much a mainstream hobby, with gamers now appearing in every demographic — and his love for gaming has helped him excel in his job.

“It can’t be understated. You have to be passionate about the products you’re selling. I came into the company with that passion,” he says.

My Experience Using Inventory Management Software

My experience with online Inventory Management Software has been limited due to the fact that I haven’t with many physical products in my career. Most of my career has been working with digital products.

However, I have tested these products and recommend that you do too. Most of them offer free inventory management software trials that will give you the opportunity to see, like me, if you like the product and if it is able to work for your line of business. Small business owners will appreciate this, and maybe medium to large companies will even try before they buy!

Don’t be afraid to start a free trial and utilize their support team, that’s what they are there for.

Call them, email them, and ask a lot of questions. Inventory software is amazing and can keep track of every part of your physical products. A good inventory management system will make your life so much better.

Some of the larger Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have Inventory features built into them and integrate multiple business features such as customer relationship management, vendor management, and more. They allow for multiple warehouse management of parts for asset management tracking.

I used Cisco NetSuite in my Management of Information Systems (MS/MIS) master’s degree education program. I learned how to set the system up and add inventory that needed to be tracked and accounted for and associated with a dollar amount so you can budget accordingly. So I am familiar with how these systems function on a high level, I’m just not that techie guy anymore. In my younger days, maybe 🙂

You’re probably wondering how you can free up more time to focus on your business.
